On December 12th, 2017, the 12th Confucius Institute Conference held a conference forum centering on “Development of Confucius Institute and Building of a Community of Shared Future for Mankind”. Five university presidents from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe as well as famous Chinese writer Liu Zhenyun attended the forum upon invitation. They shared brilliant views on topics such as the close relations between the future development of Confucius Institutes and the building of a community of shared future for mankind. The speakers all agreed that Confucius Institutes can boost the building of a community of shared future for mankind, and achieve greater development in the process of building the community. Their views are as follows:
First, Confucius Institutes reflect the cultural ideas of “inclusiveness” and “harmony in diversity”, which conforms to the fundamental idea of building a community of shared future for mankind. Guo Lixin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shandong University, said that the Chinese nation is always willing to accept and absorb outstanding foreign cultures, and maintains its unique features. Based on the cooperation in running schools by Chinese and foreign universities, Confucius Institutes have carried out Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture promotion activities according to the practical demands of different regions, which is an epitomize of the cultural ideas of the Chinese nation and conforms with the fundamental thoughts in building a community of shared future for mankind, i.e., “all people belong to one family” and “harmony in diversity”. Cecilia White, Rector of the University of Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano of Colombia, said that inclusiveness, benevolence and righteousness are the essence of the Chinese culture, and are also one of the fundamental ideas in building a community of shared future for mankind. Confucius Institutes share not only language across the world, but also philosophical ideas of the Chinese nation throughout history. The communication of values is of vital importance.
Second, Confucius Institutes help to realize economic concepts of “co-sharing and win-win results, reciprocity and mutual benefit”, which is in line with the development concept of building a community of shared future for mankind. When answering to questions from delegates, Luke Mumba, Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia, said that Zambia and China have focused on infrastructure construction, carried out cooperation in various projects within the “Belt and Road” initiative, and achieved reciprocity and win-win results with Zambia’s natural and human resources as well as China’s technical and financial support. Among the projects, Confucius Institutes have provided a solid and lasting foundation for bilateral cooperation through Chinese language training and Chinese culture popularization among local students and technicians. Eesa Bastaki, President of the University of Dubai of the United Arab Emirates, said that under the backdrop of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is a general trend for all countries in the world to strengthen contacts and cooperation. And Confucius Institutes have the ability and responsibility to boost technical cooperation, economic and trade exchanges and educational communication between China and other countries so as to realize the sharing of fruits and mutual benefit.
Third, Confucius Institutes are able to practice thoughts in communication that “State-to-state relations thrive when there is friendship between the peoples. And such friendship grows out of close interactions between the peoples”, which coincides with the core requirement of building a community of shared future for mankind. Liu Zhenyun, a professor and famous writer at the School of Literal Arts of Renmin University of China, said that literary works are an important way to know one country’s people and break inherent prejudices. Confucius Institutes have actively translated Chinese literary works, introduced them to other countries, and established a communication platform for Chinese writers and foreign readers, strongly boosting the people-to-people bond between the Chinese and people from other countries. When answering questions from delegates, Keith Burnett, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield and Council Member of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, said that the core of both the community of shared future for mankind and the “Belt and Road” initiative lies in “people”. The essence of the contact between two countries with different economic foundations and social systems is a collection of exchanges between individuals. Harmonious coexistence between people is the core condition for us to seek joint development of the individual and the collective, of a country and other countries, and to build a community of shared future for mankind.
